work for oprah

Working for Oprah certainly has its perks. The AFP is reporting that Oprah Winfrey celebrated her 55th birthday in Barcelona with 1,700 of her employees and their families. The party took place over the weekend at Poble Espanyol, a popular tourist destination with shops, bars and restaurants. Her lucky guests will spend three days in the city before embarking on a 10-day Mediterranean cruise aboard the Norwegian Gem liner sailing to Italy, Turkey, Greece, and Malta. The ship has 11 bars and lounges, 12 restaurants, pool, hot tubs, a beauty salon, spa, casino, cigar club, library and even a bowling alley. Oprah is said to be spending around $5,400 per person on the cruise.

CLear shuts down

There are a lot of angry frequent fliers today. Verified Identity Pass, the company that offered the Clear program has shut down. For an annual fee, Clear helped travelers skirt through faster airport security checkpoints. Members of the Clear program had to go through an intensive screening process and pay membership fees of 178 to $199 per year. Because the company is in bad financial straits, Verified Identity Pass is not issuing refunds.

The company said it wasn't able to negotiate a deal with its creditors, and its Clear fast-lane security check service stopped operations abruptly late Monday. More than a quarter million customers won't get refunds of membership fees that ranged from $178 to $199 per year and many people bought multi-year memberships. Some Clear members found out via e-mail but many did not learn that the program was over until they showed up at the airport.

peter blake for stella

We still curse the sense of fiscal responsibility that kept us from purchasing those splendid Jeff Koons-printed frocks that Stella McCartney-showed for spring 2006. Now older, wiser, and able to subsist for weeks on a family-size bag of mixed nuts from the dollar store, we're not about to let her latest art-tastic collaboration pass us by. Famed artist and designer Peter Blake (or as we call him, "Sir Peter") has created a print for McCartney that appears exclusively on a summer capsule collection she designed for high fashion e-tailer net-a-porter. As you might recall, Blake designed an album cover for a band in which McCartney's father played.

The Blake-designed cloud print appears on a breezy silk jersey dress and shirt as well as beachy accessories such as strappy espadrilles and a canvas bag. There's also a cloudy t-shirt (organic cotton, of course) and a coordinating pair of dip-dyed skinny jeans.

STELLA KIDS

STELLA MCCARTNEY is to launch a collection for GapKids and babyGap, it was announced this morning, and the British designer - and mother-of-three - couldn't be more excited.
"For years now I've wanted to create a collection for kids, it's something I've often been asked about," McCartney revealed. "I believe that this one off collaboration will be a great way for customers to be able to participate in the Stella McCartney brand."
The collection is set to launch later this year and will be available in Gap stores in the UK, France, Ireland Canada and Japan - as well as online and in stores across the US.
"I believe that kids clothing should be more accessibly priced, which is particularly important at the moment given the current climate," the designer said. "It's really exciting for us to do a boys and girls collection for the first time."

Anna Wintour Left Jason Wu's Show to Go Watch Roger Federer Play

Anna Wintour arrived to take in Jason Wu's Cruise 2010 show at the Greenwich Hotel in New York, but took a phone call and left four minutes before the show started, leaving Wu's publicist confused. A Vogue staffer told Fashion Week Daily: “She had a plane to catch. But she saw Jason’s entire collection earlier and really liked what she was looking at.” Today, she showed up in Paris with boyfriend Shelby Bryan to watch her favorite athlete Roger Federer try to win the elusive French Open. Maybe she'll be meeting Bee Shaffer, who was in Venice yesterday, at some point?
Aw, you’re nervous. Biting your nails? Take those fingers out of your mouth.

Want to know where I’m putting mine? Under a heat lamp. To get your paws on the metallic, mirror-finished nail coverings, you have to warm them up.

That’s how those sun-kissed California girls do it. Just pick your brassy pattern: silver foil, pink leopard, gold lightning, chrome tweed, fishnet. Once your digits are buffed, decals are applied with heat and trimmed down to fit your nails. What do you mean you’re wet? No, baby, there’s no drying time.

Manis are chemical and chip free. Doesn’t that feel good? If they peel a little — prematurely — just run them under the hair dryer until hot to the touch.

That should satisfy you for at least ten days.

Alife Presents

Walk down Rivington Street on the Lower East Side, and at a point just before it crosses with Clinton, you may or may not notice a few doors marked only with plaques bearing the Alife logos.

Slowly but surely, the New York streetwear brand has taken over three storefronts next to and across the street from each other, and this month will add a fourth. Alife Presents, as the space at 157 Rivington is to be called, will be a gallery and event spot for the company who often host events in the backyard of their other stores.

Officially opening its doors on June 11 with a solo show by Kai Regan, the NY Alife Presents will be overshadowed by the opening of one in LA on June 16, complete with an appearance by Shepard Fairey for the launch of his Arkitip issue.

Comme des Garçons BLACK,

Comme des Garçons BLACK, a line consistenting of Bearbrick/Medicom collaboration pieces and Comme classics in what is essentially designer Rei Kawakubo's response to the recession, is due on 10th Avenue and 17th Street by the end of this month. It should arrive around the same time as a special BLACK corner in Barneys, which has an even more limited time frame of 2 weeks from its June 22 opening.
