While Delta is still catching heat for offering its newly-designed flight attendant uniforms -- a red sexy Richard Tyler wrap around dress -- in sizes 18 and lower, Air Tahiti Nui is also tinkering with crew uniforms.

The airline commissioned Balenciaga to design new uniforms in honor of its 10th anniversary. There are twenty new uniform styles in total, including those for pilots and ground personnel. One is a more traditional flight attendant outfit, a suit or suit-like affair, rendered in a solid ocean blue and a lighter "lagoon" blue, sort of an aqua. It's pretty, if not envelope-pushing (and I'm not completely sure I see the Balenciaga look to it) but the good news you only see it when you're boarded and de-planing, in-flight, because sometime after take-off the cabin crew does a take-off of their own -- they slip into something more comfortable.

Working for Oprah certainly has its perks. The AFP is reporting that Oprah Winfrey celebrated her 55th birthday in Barcelona with 1,700 of her employees and their families. The party took place over the weekend at Poble Espanyol, a popular tourist destination with shops, bars and restaurants. Her lucky guests will spend three days in the city before embarking on a 10-day Mediterranean cruise aboard the Norwegian Gem liner sailing to Italy, Turkey, Greece, and Malta. The ship has 11 bars and lounges, 12 restaurants, pool, hot tubs, a beauty salon, spa, casino, cigar club, library and even a bowling alley. Oprah is said to be spending around $5,400 per person on the cruise.

CLear shuts down

There are a lot of angry frequent fliers today. Verified Identity Pass, the company that offered the Clear program has shut down. For an annual fee, Clear helped travelers skirt through faster airport security checkpoints. Members of the Clear program had to go through an intensive screening process and pay membership fees of 178 to $199 per year. Because the company is in bad financial straits, Verified Identity Pass is not issuing refunds.

The company said it wasn't able to negotiate a deal with its creditors, and its Clear fast-lane security check service stopped operations abruptly late Monday. More than a quarter million customers won't get refunds of membership fees that ranged from $178 to $199 per year and many people bought multi-year memberships. Some Clear members found out via e-mail but many did not learn that the program was over until they showed up at the airport.

Famed artist and designer Peter Blake (or as we call him, "Sir Peter") has created a print for McCartney that appears exclusively on a summer capsule collection she designed for high fashion e-tailer net-a-porter. As you might recall, Blake designed an album cover for a band in which McCartney's father played.

The Blake-designed cloud print appears on a breezy silk jersey dress and shirt as well as beachy accessories such as strappy espadrilles and a canvas bag. There's also a cloudy t-shirt (organic cotton, of course) and a coordinating pair of dip-dyed skinny jeans.

Slowly but surely, the New York streetwear brand has taken over three storefronts next to and across the street from each other, and this month will add a fourth. Alife Presents, as the space at 157 Rivington is to be called, will be a gallery and event spot for the company who often host events in the backyard of their other stores.

Hip-hop star Kanye West has just published a book of "Kanye-isms" with co-author J. Sakiya Sandifer. Entitled "Thank You And You're Welcome," the slim book contains 52-pages of West wisdom.

In a blog-baiting Reuters feature, West bragged about being a "proud non-reader," and said he hoped to avoid the "wordy and so self-absorbed" style of novels. His mini-book collects aphorisms and brief stories from the artist.

The company has been allegedly shopped around for $300 million even though the market value is perceived to less than $100 million. Part of the reason for wide difference in figures is because the company wants to make sure that any deal will help Playboy's 83-year-old founder maintain his lavish lifestyle. Although one of Hugh Hefner's homes is on the market for nearly $28 million there is still main Playboy mansion and its tremendous upkeep to consider. He remains the editor of Playboy magazine and has said he wants to pass down his interest in the company to his teenage sons Marston and Cooper.

The machine, which is called a Semi-Automatic offers everything from gift shop staples like a T-shirt or a toothbrush to really outlandish stuff like a Bentley Arnage. The collection of more than 60 items is priced between $10 and $1.2 million and includes clothing, cars, handcuffs, events and even property.

Nines needs help

The beautiful Nines luxury hotel in Portland, Oregon had the unfortunate timing to open just as the economic crisis began to take hold last fall. The resulting fallout means that this $141 million hotel is struggling to pay its bills (much like a couple of hotels in Scottsdale, Arizona).

The Oregonian reports that the Portland Development Commission agreed this week to accept delayed payments on taxpayer-funded loans to keep the developer from defaulting. The developer, Sage Hospitality Resources of Denver requested the delay with Ken Geist, Sage's executive vice president for development, telling the Portland Development Commission's board that the hotel could not have picked a worse opening date. The sudden and rapid drop in corporate travel spending deeply cut into the hotel's expected revenue. It is expected to generate less than half of what it was originally supposed to deliver in net operating income in its first year.

Smyth Hotel Opens in Tribeca

Just in time for spring in New York City, Thompson Hotels has opened Smyth in TriBeCa. The boutique hotel offers 100 guestrooms in a newly-constructed building on West Broadway and Chambers Street. The name comes from "the anonymity of Mr. & Mrs. Smith" and is meant to provide an urban refuge for the hip. The lobby was designed by Yabu Pushelberg and staff uniforms were created by Helmut Lang.The rooms are decorated in rich wine tones with walnut paneling and chrome-accented furniture and marble bathrooms. Rooms also feature Kiehl's products, robes by Frette and linens by Sferra as well as an in-room pantry stocked with Dean & Deluca snacks and naughties from Kiki de Montparnasse. Art by John Sparagana adorns each guest room and paintings by self taught Argentinean artist, Santiago Rubino, are featured in the lobby's interior.

Restaurateur Frederick Lesort is behind the Lobby Bar and the Smyth has a 24-hour room service menu. The Jour et Nuit Restaurant & Lounge will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, with an espresso bar offering sandwiches and pastries during the day and cured meats with alcoholic beverages at night. The lower level Cellar Cocktail Lounge offers a hideaway to sample unique cocktails. Rates start at $275 for a standard room, $575 for a king suite, and $3,500 for the penthouse.

The Gansevoort Hotel brand is opening its first island resort officially next month: Gansevoort Turks & Caicos. The hotel is located along the western section of Grace Bay Beach on Providenciales. Gansevoort Turks & Caicos is a 91-room property built around the 7,000 square foot infinity-edge swimming pool which has "lounging islands" for daytime sunbathing or romantic nighttime candlelit canoodling.

Another great book that I picked up this weekend...

Satirical novel published in 1759 that is the best-known work by Voltaire. It is a savage denunciation of metaphysical optimism--as espoused by the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz--that reveals a world of horrors and folly. In this philosophical fantasy, naive Candide sees and suffers such misfortune that he ultimately rejects the philosophy of his tutor Doctor Pangloss, who claims that "all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds." Candide and his companions--Pangloss, his beloved Cunegonde, and his servant Cacambo--display an instinct for survival that provides them hope in an otherwise somber setting. So this weekend was A LOT different from last weekend--no European city, popping $100G's worth of champagne at the club, or hanging out with millionaires--but it was relaxing. I spent most of it at the bookstore reading, scouring mags, got a epicurean facial, watched Sex in the City (the scene where Big leaves Carrie at the alter is sad) and am resting up for my next adventures.

The name of London-born, photographer and graphic designer Harri Peccinotti may be unfamiliar, but his work has been hugely influential. One of the very first to shoot the legendary Pirelli Calendar, he "coined the idiom of gleaming bodies and strong, sleek sexuality", one that is copied by better known photographers and used to sell luxury products to this day. Born in 1938, Peccinotti served as art director of Flair, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Vogue and Nova.

Nova, one of the most influential magazines of the 1960s,introduced epoch-making changes in graphics, formats and photo editing. A brilliant new book dedicated to his work from Damiani (above) presents a broad selection of his photography published in fashion magazines, together with page proofs, book jackets and album covers created by Peccinotti over a period of about 40 years.

just got back from a crazy LONDON adventure...I may need a couple of days to recoup!
I don't think I've done so many "walks of fame" in such a long time...had a great host (Shak--you're amazing), had some great meals (Nobu, Babylon) lots of tea, shopped, made some incredible new friends, hung out with roger federer, and it was the first time in my entire life that I've ever seen a group of guys pop 62 (YES 62) bottles of champagne at one of the hottest clubs IN LONDON--Movida (that's baller status)....oh and forget about hotels...it's all about rooms at private clubs in London, soho house, home house, Goucho...we stayed at the home house and it was like nothing else...

A company called Crystal Lagoons has announced an ambitious new project, to build the world's largest swimming pool in the Egyptian desert. The pool will consist of twelve giant lagoons at the Sharm El Sheikh beach. The pool is part of a master building plan that includes homes, hotels, a museum and a shopping center. Crystal Lagoons built the current world's largest pool which is at San Alfonso del Mar in Chile. It will be soon be surpassed by its Egyptian relative, which is expected to be finished around July 2009

One of my new favorite places to go out in London is certainly The Groucho Club, a members-only club with three bars, a brasserie and a formal dining room. The best part, really, are the people — everyone invited or involved in the club has a deep history in publishing, arts, media or creative fields. Unlike most clubs in London, everyone was actually very nice; they knew if you were in there, you were probably doing something interesting. The space also has a constantly evolving and fantastic art selection (when I was there, Banksy and Damien Hirst were on the dining room walls). In addition to all the open space for some good partying, the club has 19 bedrooms for members coming in from out of town that need a place to call home. The name was naturally inspired by one of Groucho Marx’s famous quips; “I don’t want to join a club that will accept me as a member,” which I absolutely love. Find someone respected in creative arts or media who knows the London scene and they’re likely a member — this place is worth a visit on a Saturday night.

In a move that's sure to have the notoriously protective types at LVMH up in arms, a provocative New York-based artist has destroyed $12,000 worth of Louis Vuitton Alma handbags (above) for a new sculpture. Conceptual artist R. Lloyd Ming had an assistant purchase a dozen of the $1,000 bags at Louis Vuitton's Manhattan flagship over the holidays. He then cut them in half to make a sculpture for his new solo exhibit, "I Am Not Chinese." As the show's title suggests, the focus of the exhibit is China and what Ming calls the tenuous relationship between China and America, the artist's website notes. Ming's works addresses many controversial Chinese issues including censorship, capitalism under communist rule, trade imbalance and human rights.

It's not the best time for it but a new casino has opened in Las Vegas in an off-Strip location. The M Resort Spa Casino is a $1 billion resort casino located on South Las Vegas Boulevard and St. Rose Parkway about 10 miles away from the central resort area. The M Resort offers wireless coverage throughout the resort and also features an on-site gas station and M Pharmacy. The resort has 390 guest rooms and suites ranging from 550 to 2,400 square feet. Rooms all have pillow-top beds, a Bose sound system and 42-inch flatscreen television and the bathrooms include an inlaid mirror television and separate bathtub and shower.
